Men racing the 10K at 70–79 are remarkable competitive runners. WMA standards account for the significant physiological changes of this decade — achieving any competitive result here requires sustained fitness that most people at this age do not maintain.
Quick answer: For men age 70–79 running the 10K, a 60% age-grade (“Local Class”) at age 70 is 59:34. A 70% Regional Class performance is 51:04, requiring easy pace 10:02/mi, threshold 8:22/mi. These benchmarks are from WMA (World Masters Athletics) 2025 standards.
| Age | Recreational 50% | Local Class 60% | Regional 70% | National 80% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70 | 1:11:29 11:30/mi | 59:34 9:35/mi | 51:04 8:13/mi | 44:41 7:11/mi |
| 75 | 1:16:13 12:16/mi | 1:03:31 10:13/mi | 54:26 8:46/mi | 47:38 7:40/mi |
The training paces below are derived from each WMA benchmark time. If you are running at 70% age-grade, these are the training zones that produce and maintain that performance level.
| Age | Level | Time | Easy | Threshold | Interval |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70 | Local Class | 59:34 | 10:59 | 9:24 | 8:27 |
| Regional Class | 51:04 | 10:02 | 8:22 | 7:42 | |
| National Class | 44:41 | 8:52 | 7:23 | 6:48 | |
| 75 | Local Class | 1:03:31 | 11:23 | 9:53 | 8:47 |
| Regional Class | 54:26 | 10:25 | 8:47 | 8:02 | |
| National Class | 47:38 | 9:24 | 7:49 | 7:12 |

The 10K is run close to threshold for most of the race, so threshold running (20 to 40 minutes at threshold pace, whole or in repeats) is its most race-specific session. Intervals raise the ceiling above it, and easy running carries the volume. At a 70% age grade (Regional Class) the 10K goes from 51:04 at 70 to 54:26 at 75, and age grading keeps that target fair as the decade passes. How much easy running you need between hard sessions is individual. It shows in how your next workout goes, not in your age.
Using WMA age-grading standards, a 70-year-old man running 59:34 scores 60% ("Local Class"). A 70% "Regional Class" performance at that age is 51:04. These benchmarks are derived from world-record data for each age group, not population averages.
The right training paces depend on your current fitness. At 70% age-grade (51:04 for a 70-year-old), your training zones are: Easy 10:02/mi, Threshold 8:22/mi, Interval 7:42/mi. At 60% age-grade (59:34): Easy 10:59/mi, Threshold 9:24/mi. Use the calculator below to find your exact paces.
WMA data shows a gradual performance decline with each decade — typically two to five percent per five years for most distances. The age factors in the table above account for this and allow fair comparison across ages. Consistent training often offsets age-related decline significantly. Many runners in their 70s who train with structure outperform their unstructured earlier years on an age-adjusted basis.
